Privacy Policy
Effective date: August 26, 2026
Private by default: You can use Chef’s Pantry in Local Kitchen Mode without creating an account or providing an email address. When you choose synced household features, we process only the data required to authenticate you, synchronize your inventory, and keep the service fast and reliable. We do not sell personal data or use it for targeted advertising.
1. Scope and contact
This policy explains how Chef’s Pantry (“Chef’s Pantry,” “we,” “our,” or “us”) handles information in the Chef’s Pantry mobile and web applications and on chefspantry.app.
Questions, privacy requests, and deletion inquiries can be sent to [email protected].
2. Information we process
Local Kitchen information
If you use Local Kitchen Mode, pantry items, shopping items, recipes, preferences, reminder settings, and local migration snapshots are stored on your device. No account is required.
Synced account and household information
If you create a synced account, we process your email address, display name, selected avatar and color, authentication records, household membership and join code, pantry and shopping entries, saved recipes, and related timestamps. Passwords are submitted securely to Supabase Auth; Chef’s Pantry does not retain your readable password.
Diagnostics and performance information
We record limited operational events such as feature type, response duration, result counts, pantry size, app version, device platform, status, categories, locations, and sanitized error details. Recipe search text is not logged; only its length is recorded. Full barcodes are not logged; diagnostics retain only a masked prefix. Household join codes are masked.
Website waitlist
If you voluntarily join the launch waitlist, we process the submitted email address and signup timestamp to send launch-related updates. Joining the waitlist does not create an app account.
3. Camera, notifications, and device features
- Camera: camera access is used when you choose barcode scanning. Camera images and video are not stored or uploaded by Chef’s Pantry; the detected barcode number may be sent to product lookup providers.
- Notifications: expiration and Quick Check reminders are scheduled on your device after permission is granted. Notifications are optional and can be disabled in the app or system settings.
- Local storage: the app uses device storage to preserve kitchen data, settings, authentication sessions, and offline changes.
4. How we use information
- Provide authentication, password recovery, household invitations, cloud backup, and real-time synchronization.
- Display and update pantry, shopping, freshness, recipe, and reminder features.
- Resolve barcode product details, translate search text when needed, and retrieve recipes requested by the user.
- Protect the service, enforce rate limits, diagnose failures, and improve reliability and performance.
- Send requested account emails, security codes, support replies, and waitlist announcements.
5. Service providers and external services
We disclose information only as needed to operate requested features:
- Supabase: authentication, database storage, real-time synchronization, server functions, rate limiting, diagnostics, and website waitlist storage.
- Email delivery providers: account verification, password recovery, security, waitlist, and support messages.
- Open Food Facts and UPCItemDB: barcode numbers are submitted when online product lookup is requested.
- Allrecipes: recipe search terms and recipe-page requests are submitted when online recipe discovery is used.
- Google Translate: user-entered search text may be submitted when translation is needed for recipe discovery.
- Content and shopping providers: image hosts and external shopping sites receive normal web-request information when their content or links are opened.
These providers process information under their own terms and privacy policies. We do not authorize them to use Chef’s Pantry account or household information for their own targeted advertising.
6. Shared households
Members of the same household can see the shared kitchen name, member roster, pantry, shopping list, and household recipes. Do not add sensitive information to shared entries that you do not want other household members to see.
7. Retention and deletion
- Local Kitchen data remains on the device until you remove it, clear app storage, or uninstall the app, subject to device backup behavior.
- Synced account and household information remains while the account or shared household is active.
- Operational telemetry is automatically scheduled for deletion after 90 days.
- Waitlist email addresses remain until launch communications end or you request removal.
You can permanently delete a synced account inside Profile → Account → Delete Account. A member’s account and profile are removed while the shared kitchen remains. When an owner deletes their account, ownership transfers to the longest-standing remaining member; if no member remains, the household and its pantry, shopping, and recipe data are deleted. Limited records may be retained when legally required or temporarily remain in protected service backups.
8. Your choices and rights
You may use Local Kitchen Mode without providing an email, decline camera or notification permission, edit or remove kitchen entries, leave or delete an account through the app, and request access, correction, or deletion by contacting support. Depending on where you live, applicable law may provide additional privacy rights. We will verify requests before acting on account information.
9. Security, children, and international processing
We use access controls, tenant-isolated database rules, encrypted network connections, restricted server credentials, and data minimization. No system is perfectly secure, so protect your password and household join code.
Chef’s Pantry is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Information may be processed in countries where our service providers operate, subject to appropriate protections and applicable law.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when features, providers, or legal requirements change. We will update the effective date and provide additional notice in the app when a change materially affects how personal information is handled.
